Kindness …

Max Patch Family Love

Never to be underestimated.

Those who are kind, do so out of this special place in their heart.

I’ve met a few people in my life, and recognize the difference between genuine love given (kindness) from those seeking something in return for a favor done.

The difference is this…

… no expectation of a gift of any kind in return. Friendship remains intact and conversations and interactions continue to carry with them their natural rhythm, playfulness, joy, sorrow, triumphs, losses and love.

I’ve given to many people in my lifetime without remembering who or what, and upon occasion, one of these persons will come back to me and say, ‘Hey, thanks again, just wanted to give this back to you.’ I look at them and say, I don’t remember giving this to you. It makes me feel good to give without expectation of something in return. Occasionally, when I can get away with it and have a few extra dollars, I will buy the persons coffee behind me in the coffee line, or bring someone flowers to someone who isn’t expecting anything but my presence. It’s a gift of love and kindness.

May the year ahead be full of unexpected gifts at an unexpected time.

Getting through it

Adams Family circa 1966

How does one get through it

from the beginning as a child, helpless and homeless

with love and tenderness

questions and falls

How does one get through it

from teenage years, believing the knowledge learned is all that’s needed to survive

bad decisions, determination, and a decision  to survive, not die

How does one get through it

with faith, prayer, friends and an inner longingness to answer one’s call

Love and Loss

Someone once asked Where does love go when the lights go out?

Love is love – it’s an action – it’s a dance – it’s a balancing act

Loss brings one to their knees – to the ground – spinning them around

Love is loss turned inside out and upside down

Where does love go when the lights go out?  To sleep I imagine – to dream – to hope and believe.

FLAMING JUNE by Frederic Leighton 1895

Flaming June

Remembering a Death

dying feels like drowning

the body slows down

listening for the breath

listening to the heatrbeat

drenched in sweat

longing for oxygen

struggling silently to breathe

all the while there are those around them – praying, comforting, believing they are ready to let go, telling themselves that this is the way he or she would want to go

gurgling, heart pounding, seeking oxygen

here comes another shot of morephine

asking themselves while holding their breath is this when he/she will let go

is this really how he/she or I would really like to let go

a hole is inside of me – my breath is shallower than normal, I have to remember to breathe

she said she was ready

he never said so in those concrete words I’m ready to go

he blew kisses instead as we said goodnight.

Mother’s Day

A day of remembrance of those who gave birth to us and those who gave birth to them and if we are mother’s ourselves, it’s a day where we remember giving birth to ours.

A few years ago, I wrote this poem and recited it for the first time ever in front of 50 people or so. The title is Love ’em Up.Molly at Max Patch

Love ’em Up

with hugs and kisses

listen to their wishes

no matter what they seem

no matter what their dreams

Love ’em Up

with hugs and kisses

teach them what you know

demonstrate your love by listening to them while they grow

Love ’em Up

Let them be children

play in streams, color, sing, climb mountains, swim the oceans, bruise knees

teach them to love themselves, to love others, no matter their ethnicity, religion or creed, no matter how they seem.

Love ’em Up.
