Transition

that place in-between

not knowing where you’re headed

and what will be

a place where only Faith can lead

a time for prayer and meditation

served with a glass of mint tea, sunshine and gurgling water

company visits in the form of an occasional hummingbird, butterfly or dove

Transition calls for Faith in the unknown and unseen

for the window to open

space for fresh air and breath

Time to let go and Believe where one will be led will be safe and free

Where’s Winter?

Here in Applachia …

land of heavy snowfalls, frost, rime ice and mistletoe

winter seems to have passed us by returning to Spring

daffodils and irises are sprouting through the brown, soggy ground

record rainfalls, fog and plenty of clouds

Where’s winter asks the worms as they squirm along the pavement looking for their home in the darkness of the earth

Where’s winter asks the fish in the pond as they swim around, confused by warm temperatures, sunshine, short days and rain

Where’s winter asks the trees as they sway back and forth confused by the winds of an early Spring…instead of Winter’s frozen ground

Where’s winter asks the farmers as their fields begin to sprout

Where’s winter asks I as I look about?

Mourning Dove Call

The mourning dove sings in late July – the air thick with humidity as the waterfall gurgles

a song she sings  sounds like an announcement that  summer days will soon end, and school begin

cobwebs form in windowsills and high up in the doorway where spiders await an evening meal

the sweetness of the Dove’s call reminds one to take stock of what we have,  to be fully present, in the here and now, eyes open, ears too – look around and breathe in and breathe –  listen out loud

birds clamor to join  her – Cardinals, Blue Jays, Finches, Frog – All are present for the Dove’s roll call

A rainy day in May

Rain & Lilly

A rainy day in May

lasted all month long

with clouds and hail

winds and flooding

who knew a rainy day

could blow down trees

flood fields

and delay Spring

today the sun shone

today, now the 4th of June

there’s a saying in the mountains of Western North Carolina

if you don’t like the weather, wait a few moments, it will change

the rainy moment, turned into a day, into a month, the month of May.

Lullaby of Spring to Summer

Lullabys are lazy and fluid – like a warm summer breeze or a slow moving river

  • – a summer breeze that ever so lightly ruffles the thin window sheers,
  • – or a slow moving river that barely carries the thick blanket of pollen to the ocean like a giant barge moving train cars through a canal in winter, not as fast as an inch worm.

Lullabys, like this summer breeze, sometimes brings with it a fragrant smell of honeysuckle followed by a hint of clover and wild roses. A smell that’s so intoxicating and memorable. That smell alone, whispers a lullaby that spring has become summer.

Remember the familiar lullaby that begins:

hush little baby, don’t you cry now sings….

honeysuckle and clover will soon visit to soothe your tired eyes

the sun shines through the sheers letting you know – you are not alone

hush little  baby, don’t you cry beckons…

the doves play outside your window, playing leap frog or piggy back over pillows

hush little baby, don’t you cry…

the river’s singing a whisper to sleep soundly, all is well, make a wish upon the fireflies and soon the night sky will light up like the 4th of July.

hush little baby, don’t you cry … close your eyes … wish upon a star … dry your tears — smell the the sky… and dream of fireflies on the 4th of July.
